Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a procedure that may be done for a variety of reasons. It may be to lengthen the crowns of your teeth, making your teeth look longer. Or it may be to give a tooth stability after the tooth has fractured or if the tooth has severe decay, to support a restoration.

Excessive gum tissue

Some people have a lot of gum tissue around their upper teeth. Their teeth are covered with too much gum tissue, which makes the visible parts of their teeth seem short. This also can be treated with crown lengthening.

This type of surgery is performed by a periodontist, a specialist who treats gum tissues. During this procedure, the periodontist will reshape your gum and bone tissue around one or more of your teeth. This can make your gum line appear more even. It also can help reveal more of your teeth so that your teeth look taller, eliminating the gummy appearance and making your smile look natural.

Restorative crown lengthening

Your dentist or periodontist may also recommend dental crown lengthening to make a restorative or cosmetic dental procedure possible.

Perhaps your tooth is decayed, broken below the gum line, or has insufficient tooth structure for a restoration, such as a crown or bridge. Crown lengthening adjusts the gum and bone level to expose more of the tooth, accessing more of the strong tooth structure so it can be restored.

The procedure

The periodontist begins the procedure once you are completely numb.

A small incision is made and the gums are gently lifted away from the tooth. The bone and gum tissue are reshaped to reveal enough of the natural tooth to create a secure anchor for the crown and to maintain a healthy distance between the bone and gumline. Lastly, a couple of sutures may be placed in the gums to speed healing.

It is important to follow the periodontist's instructions on post-operative healing and recare. When the periodontist determines healing is complete, your dentist will build up the core of the tooth and prepare the tooth for the crown. We place the crown to cover and protect the damaged tooth.

This procedure saves and restores a tooth that might otherwise be lost, allows the gums to reattach properly to the tooth, and makes the area where the crown meets the tooth accessible and easy to clean.

Whether it is to save your tooth or give a more natural smile, crown lengthening is an important dental procedure.

  • Dr. Rehder is very professional, yet not too serious as he is doing your teeth. He makes it relaxing and is able to keep your mind away from his work (I have never liked going to the dentist, but Dr. Rehder makes the experience as close to pleasant as a dentist visit can be).

  • Thank you Dr. Rehder and Christine for the "always exciting" and "never a dull moment" orthodontist appointment. See you in two weeks to do it all over again. Ok maybe-not ALL over again.
