There is a way to get your kids to fight cavities that won't end up in a battle. Let them chew gum sweetened with xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sweetener "harvested" from corn cobs or birch or beech trees. Xylitol has been clinically proven to reduce the ability of cavity-causing bacteria to stick to teeth.
If plaque, which is stained red in the photo, is not cleaned away every day it can build up on teeth. The longer it builds up, the more chance it has to create a cavity. Xylitol makes it difficult for the plaque to attach itself to the tooth surface.
Mothers who chew gum with xylitol pass fewer cavity-causing bacteria to their infants and toddlers. Chewing gum also stimulates the flow of saliva. Saliva protects your teeth by washing away debris and bacteria and can help remineralize spots where decay is just beginning.
To get the most benefit from xylitol, look for gums and candies that list it as the first ingredient. Xylitol also comes in a granular form. You can sweeten beverages and use it in many recipes.
Chewing gum sweetened with xylitol is not a replacement for brushing and flossing, but it is a sweet weapon in your fight against tooth decay.
